Project Runway Copyright
Did you see Project Runway last night? Aside from the drama about Carol Hannah getting real sick, there was a little tidbit that caught our attention, and maybe it caught yours. Irina, from NYC, was planning on showing a line of clothes incorporating old t-shirts from Coney Island.
This link might die one day, but for now, check it out:
The sketches looked great and who doesnt like the feel of old worn t-shirts. But there was one snag: she didn’t have the rights to the images on the shirt! That’s right. Some artist (whose name will probably surface sooner or later) made those images. So Irina would have had to liscence the images to use them in her show. Obviously Bravo worked out something with whoever owns the copyright to the images, because the shirts, after all, did make it on screen.
GYST could have helped. If Irina had consulted copyright law she might have been a little more wary of using those t-shirt designs without even trying to contact the copyright holder. We don’t really fault her, per se. These things happen all the time. It was just an interesting GYST moment there, for all the world to see.
So FYI, Here is a link to some Copyright law info on the GYST Website:

It gets better – she replaced the images with text from a 2008 NY Magazine article, and it is very unclear whether she had permission to use the text, and if she claimed it as her own work!
