Job Opportunity: Executive Director, Rothko Chapel

Mission Statement: The Rothko Chapel inspires people to action through art and contemplation, nurtures reverence for the highest aspirations of humanity, and provides a forum for global concerns. 

Overview 

Nestled on a one-acre campus in the heart of Houston, the Rothko Chapel is an iconic, internationally renowned destination. Home to the acclaimed masterworks of Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, the Rothko Chapel offers an intimate setting for meditation and reflection every day of the year. More than 80,000 people, representing over 70 different countries around the globe experience the transformative power of its art each year. 

In the world today, there is no other place like the Rothko Chapel. It functions as a sacred space, a forum for matters of global concerns, and the ultimate installation of Mark Rothko’s art work. It integrates art, spirituality and human rights and social justice in a way that is both seamless and uniquely powerful. Affiliated with no particular religious tradition, the Rothko Chapel embraces contemplative practices of the world religious traditions and is committed to principles articulated in the UN Declaration of Human Rights. 

History and Key Achievements 

The Rothko Chapel, founded by Houston philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil, was dedicated in 1971 as an intimate sanctuary available to people of every belief. In 2011 it celebrated its fortieth anniversary, having achieved in those years recognition as one of the greatest artistic achievements and spiritual landmarks of the second half of the twentieth century. 

In 2000, the Rothko Chapel was listed in the United States National Register of Historic Places. It is regularly included in essays about twentieth-century art and architecture and in works devoted to sacred spaces such as National Geographic’s Sacred Places of a Lifetime: 500 of the World’s Most Peaceful and Powerful Destinations, where it is a featured entry. Past, distinguished guests include Nobel Laureates Desmond Tutu, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Rigoberta Menchú, Nelson Mandela, Amartya Sen and President Jimmy Carter, artist Brice Marden, and spiritual leaders Robert Thurman and Thomas Moore. 

Services and Programs 

Open every day of the year free of charge, the Rothko Chapel responds to the enduring need for quiet, still places. It was the desire of the de Menils to provide a place for contemplation on what it means to be fully human and to treat each other with dignity and respect. Through active programming, the Rothko Chapel engages a broad community with an integrated set of offerings that elevate the spirit, foster dialogue and champion ethical action. Approximately 100 events and programs are presented on an annual basis, attended by over 6000 individuals. Nearly all programs are made available to the public at no charge. 3 

The Chapel serves as a gathering place for locally and globally recognized voices alike to hold courageous conversations on difficult issues in the spirit of mutual understanding. Finally, the Chapel provides an inimitable atmosphere for private ceremonies such as weddings, memorial services and other celebrations of life and all its passages. 

Organizational Structure: 

The Rothko Chapel is an independent, 501(c)(3) organization solely responsible for its own funding and governed by a small, dedicated Board of Directors. Led by an Executive Director, the Chapel has seven full-time staff and nine part-time employees. 

Executive Director Position 

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will be responsible for ensuring that the Rothko Chapel mission and programs continue to develop and thrive. He or she will work to both sustain and enhance relationships non- profit and local communities as well as with benefactors, volunteers, and other key constituents. The ED will provide overall strategic leadership to the Rothko Chapel, and day-to-day guidance and mentorship the staff. He or she will play a lead role in fundraising and developing and maintaining strategic partnerships with stakeholders. 

The ED will be a confident leader and engaging team player who possesses the skills, ambition and energy to drive a highly acclaimed organization, with a national and global reach. The ED will be able to passionately and convincingly communicate the vision and mission of the Rothko Chapel. The individual will need to possess sufficient gravitas to effectively engage with the Chapel’s many constituencies and stakeholders and have the clarity of vision and operational savvy to anticipate and capture the opportunities ahead, while providing workable solutions for challenges. Arriving at the Chapel with a strong fiscal track record, the ED must demonstrate excellent management skills with a flair for maximizing resources, staff productivity and funding opportunities. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Strategic Leadership 

  • Work closely with the Board to implement the organization’s vision, define and implement the Rothko Chapel’s strategic plans, and identify and secure funding and other necessary resources. 
  • Oversee the implementation of the several site projects that constitute the central portion of the Rothko Chapel five year strategic plan. 
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization and communicate the identity and mission of the Rothko Chapel to enhance and advance the strategic priorities and goals. Effectively communicate the vision, values and strategic direction to external and internal constituencies. 

Board Relations 

  • Keep the Board informed on matters of governance and the organization’s activities as well as challenges and opportunities for the Rothko Chapel. 

Resource Development and Fiscal Oversight 

  • Develop and drive fundraising strategy and activities with foundation, individual, corporate and collaborator donors. Attract and diversify major giving to Rothko Chapel while maintaining the existing donor relationships. 
  • Assume managerial responsibility for the financial health and stability of the Rothko Chapel. Work closely with and empower the staff to ensure that the organization is managed responsibly and effectively. Oversee the planning and management of the budget and all revenues and expenses. Tailor budgets to optimally fund strategic goals. 

Program Oversight 

  • Assure the programming efforts are consistent with the overall mission, comply with the requirements of funding sources and align with organizational capacity. 
  • Administer the organization in a way that provides transparency to its programs and operations, engenders public trust in its financial stewardship, and enables the highest level of service to the public. 
  • Initiate development and implementation of strategic partnerships and collaborations with complementary local, national and global organizations. 

Staff Supervision 

  • Build and support an effective internal team environment and culture, in which each staff member and volunteer is an active and valued participant in the mission of the organization. Develop, inspire, motivate and mentor the team to collaborate and to continue to build expertise internally. 

DESIRED BACKGROUND FOR ED POSITION: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required. Advance degree preferred. 
  • At least 10 years of relevant work experience; non-profit or foundation work. 
  • Dynamic leadership and proven management skills 
  • Effective fundraiser. Experience managing a successful capital campaign strongly preferred. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a strong public speaker. 
  • A sophisticated understanding of human rights, interreligious dialogue, and the arts. Grounding and education in one or more of these areas strongly preferred. 
  • Experience overseeing building and site projects preferred. 

Compensation 

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. Compensation includes base salary commensurate with experience, group health insurance, pension plan and paid time off. 5

Side Street Projects is an artist run organization that teaches artists how to roll up their sleeves and do things themselves. TOWN CENTER ART SPACE EXHIBITION

CALL SUMMARY: 
The City of Santa Clarita Arts & Events Office (AEO) and the Santa Clarita Arts Commission (SCAC) is seeking artists or artist teams to design and display art exhibits of various types at the Westfield Valencia Town Center Art Space. This is an opportunity for artists located in Los Angeles County. 
 
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

For the past 6 years, the City of Santa Clarita and Westfield Valencia Town Center have collaborated on bringing quality art experiences to the public. The Town Center Art Space, which is an open 20 x 20 foot space on the lower level of the mall adjacent to the Food Court and just outside of Sisley Restaurant, has been used for this purpose. The Arts & Events Office is seeking exhibition proposals from individuals for this space for the upcoming season of displays (January 2015 through mid-November 2015). Exhibits will be featured for four months at the location.
 
BUDGET:
All selected artists (or art teams) shall be awarded $500 for the execution of their art exhibit, which includes the artist design fee, project-related travel, consultation throughout and project fabrication, and other artist-related costs. 
 
ARTWORK THEME(S):
Although the City of Santa Clarita, Arts & Events Office and the Santa Clarita Arts Commission do not endorse any restriction on any particular artistic content, in making decisions the project’s Artist Selection Panel will consider the fact that people of all ages will see this artworks(s).
 
TIME LINE:
Artists must be able to organize and mount the proposed exhibition by January 1, 2015. Exhibitions could open at a later date in the year, which will be at the discretion of the Arts & Events Supervisor.

HOW TO APPLY:
Artists interested in being considered should submit the following materials by email:
1. The letter should be no more than one page in length and should explain the artist’s interest in the project.
2. Three examples of the artist’s work. Art examples may be in any visual medium or a combination of mediums, such as photographs, slides, computers prints, etc.
3. The artist should include up to two selections of support materials such as review, news articles, and other related information.

The Writer’s Residency Program offers writers a private office in the historic Marion Davies Guest House for six weeks between Tuesday, January 13 and Tuesday, February 17, 2015 to complete a work-in-progress.

Studio Residency: Santa Monica

 The City of Santa Monica, Cultural Affairs Division, seeks proposals from artists and artisans living in Los Angeles County for a Studio Residency at 1450 Ocean, the Camera Obscura building in Palisades Park, Santa Monica. This Studio Residency offers shared multipurpose space with a spectacular ocean view in an iconic midcentury park building overlooking the Pier, from Tuesday, January 6 to Tuesday, March 3, 2015. The City is particularly interested in a letterpress or fine art printer who would be interested in temporarily relocating their press to the center. However all mediums will be considered.

The Left Tilt Fund is accepting proposals for 2014 Funding.

Description: The mission of The Left Tilt Fund is to promote social change, resist oppression, and empower marginalized communities. It funds organizations that address the root causes of economic, political, and social injustice through community-based organizing, education, legal advocacy, and other innovative means.

The Left Tilt Fund supports organizations that have a 501(c)(3) tax status with grants up to $10,000. The Fund does not support conferences, governmental agencies, or animal welfare organizations. The Fund does not support homeless shelters, housing providers/developers, or soup kitchens if community organizing is not part of their mission. Individuals seeking grants must have a fiscal sponsor. The Fund is particularly interested in organizations which do not have large budgets nor access to traditional funding sources.

Description: The Queens Arts Fund (QAF) offers grants to Queens-based individual artists and non-profit organizations offering distinctive arts and cultural programming that directly serves the citizens of Queens. The Queens Arts Fund is made possible in part by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) in partnership with the City Council. Individual artists may apply directly to MCAF without a fiscal sponsor.

New England Foundation for the Arts is accepting proposals for the National Dance Project Touring Award.

Description: NDP Touring Awards support U.S. tours of dance works by national and international artists with up to $35,000 in subsidy reserved for each project’s tour through NDP Presentation Grants. Each fall, up to ten dance works with planned U.S. tours are selected to receive Touring Awards through a competitive application process. These Touring Awards  represent up to $35,000 of reserved funding for each project’s tour, which in turn is distributed through the NDP Presentation Grant process to U.S. nonprofit organizations (a.k.a. presenters) to subsidize up to 50% of the artist’s fee (including housing, per diem, and travel) for the presentation of the NDP project. 

Applicants must be in an advanced stage of development and be ready for touring at the beginning of the NDP Touring Period, which begins June 1, 2015 and runs through November 30, 2016.

Cal Humanities is accepting applications for the California Documentary Project Grants.

Description: The California Documentary Project (CDP) is a competitive grants program that supports documentary film, radio, and new media productions that enhance our understanding of California and its cultures, peoples, and histories. Projects must use the humanities to provide context, depth, and perspective and be suitable for California and national audiences through broadcast and/or distribution. Since 2003, Cal Humanities has awarded approximately $4 million to projects that document the California experience and explore issues of significance to Californians. CDP grants support projects at the research and development, production, and public engagement stages.

CDP Research and Development grants are designed to strengthen the humanities content and approach of documentary media productions in their earliest stages. Projects must actively involve at least three humanities advisors to help frame and contextualize subject matter throughout the research and development phase. Grant awards range up to $10,000.

CDP Production grants are designed to strengthen the humanities content and approach of documentary media productions and help propel projects toward completion. Projects must be in the production stage, have a work-in-progress, and actively involve at least two humanities advisors in the production process. Grant awards range up to $50,000.

Chamber Music America is accepting proposals for its Presenter Consortium for Jazz grant.

Description: Chamber Music America, the national network of ensemble music professionals, was founded in 1977 to develop, strengthen, and support the chamber music community. Presenter Consortium for Jazz provides support to consortiums of three U. S. presenters that collectively engage up to three professional U.S. jazz ensembles (consisting of 2-10 musicians each) to perform at each presenter’s venue.

Presenter Consortium for Jazz funds ensemble(s)’ concert fees, travel, housing, per diem, cartage, and the presenters’ marketing and production costs for the proposed concerts. The program will fund up to 75% of the eligible expenses above, up to a maximum of $10,000 per consortium partner/$30,000 per consortium. A $1,000 incentive per partner is available to a consortium that programs a CMA New Jazz Works grantee ensemble(s) in performance of its entire CMA-commissioned work. Each consortium partner must demonstrate earned or additional contributed income in the amount of at least 25% of its total eligible expenses. In-kind revenue cannot be used as part of the match.

Description: This program is designed to provide financial assistance for non-profit organizations in the US and Canada that aim to introduce Japanese performing arts to local audiences. PAJ Touring Grants help present Japanese performing arts at multiple locations in the United States and Canada, with an emphasis on locations outside major metropolitan areas. The Lighthouse Works provides fellows with housing, food, studio space, a $250 travel allowance and an artist stipend of $1,500. Fellowships are six weeks in length and occur year-round. Job Opportunity: Ceramic Teaching Artist

ARTS is currently accepting applications from experienced Ceramic Teaching Artists for a part-time position on Wednesdays at a middle school in Mar Vista.
 

Responsibilities:
-Develop a sequential, standards-based curriculum in the arts
-Teach an arts discipline across multiple grade levels (6-8) for an entire school year
-Address the learning needs of diverse student populations
-Identify and plan cross curriculum connections in and across multiple subject areas
-Submit documentation of teaching practice, including curriculum and lesson plans
-Represent P.S. ARTS amongst multiple school community stakeholders, including classroom teachers, parents, administration, and donors
-Apply knowledge and skills through ongoing professional development into teaching practice

Skills, Qualifications, Requirements:
-Minimum three years of teaching experience. Experience teaching art, during the school day, within in a public school setting is preferred. Work with low-income communities is also preferred. 
-Middle School experience preferred.
-BA degree in arts, education, community arts or relevant field of study. MA or MFA preferred.
-Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and expertise in a specific arts discipline
-Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of or a familiarity with the California Framework for the Visual and Performing Arts
-Ability to work collaboratively in a school environment and with various school community members

In 2010 the Japanese American National Museum received America’s highest honor for museums, the federal IMLS National Medal. The National Museum is located adjacent to the Metro Gold Line in the Little Tokyo/Arts district in downtown Los Angeles, a neighborhood that has experienced an exciting revitalization with diverse new restaurants, shops, luxury apartments, and nightlife.

The mission of the Japanese American National Museum, home of the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy, “is to promote understanding and appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the Japanese American experience. Based in the historic Little Tokyo neighborhood, it has a nation-wide focus and international base of support.

 Store Associate (Holiday) is a temporary position for the 2014 catalog/holiday season. Responsible for promoting sales and orders, processing sales and providing customer service.  Up to 29 hours per week. At least one weekend day required and some evening hours.  Ideal candidate will be available to work beginning approximately September 16, 2014 thru January 15, 2015. Duties include processing On-site, phone, mail and web order sales. Assists with receipt and stocking of new merchandise and packing outgoing orders. Will promote sales of membership, gift certificates and other special sales as needed. Must be able to work with individuals of all ages and support large museum-wide events like Target Family Days and Oshogatsu. Minimum 6 months customer service experience in a retail environment. Previous experience working at a non-profit organization in collaboration with volunteers preferred. Ability to multi-task with Professional phone skills and adept with handling cash and processing sales. Must be able to provide courteous and effective service to co-workers, volunteers and the public. Knowledge of CAM data systems or similar POS system, Familiarity with Gmail and MS word and excel. Knowledge of Japanese American history and culture a plus; however, sensitivity to issues of diversity and ethnicity is essential. Background check required. DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

Join Ryman Arts as it celebrates 25 years of service in Southern California and its recent expansion to two program sites in Los Angeles and Fullerton. Ryman Arts is meeting a vital need to foster the education of young artists by providing professional fine arts classes and college and career planning, free of charge, to gifted teen artists. Ryman Arts has been designated a National Program of Excellence by the President’s Committee on the Arts & Humanities for the past three years. Almost all alumni continue on to higher education and many pursue careers in the arts.  The sequential curriculum provides college-level foundation courses in drawing and painting in a rigorous and supportive environment for 600 high school students each year, and extensive outreach in high-need communities in LA and Orange County. Classes are held on the campuses of Otis College of Art & Design and California State University, Fullerton. The Development and Communications Manager implements fundraising and communications strategies with a long-range goal of generating diversified, sustainable income and increasing its public profile to enable Ryman Arts to achieve its mission. The Development and Communications Manager writes extensive materials for grants and internal and external publications, including print, web, and social media.  This individual ensures that Ryman Arts’ image and “brand” are consistently maintained and well represented in the community, and seeks opportunities to build awareness of Ryman Arts. This individual works closely with the Executive Director, Board, other staff and consultants to ensure that fundraising and public communications are coordinated throughout the organization. This is a full time position reporting to the Executive Director. Office is located in Los Angeles.

2015 Culver City Performing Arts Grant Application Released

The Culver City Performing Arts Grant Program supports performances that occur between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015. Performances may be presented by non-profit performing arts organizations in the disciplines of theatre, music, or dance.

2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the Culver City Performing Arts Grant Program. Established in 1994 through the City’s Art in Public Places Program, the program offers grants to performing arts organizations in Los Angeles County. The program, funded by the City’s Cultural Trust Fund, is designed to support arts organizations and bring distinguished cultural programming to Culver City. Additionally, the program is supported by a contribution from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

A workshop to assist organizations with the application will be held on August 7, 2014 in the Uruapan Room at Veterans Memorial Building, located at 4117 Overland Avenue in Culver City. The workshop will begin at 7:00 PM.

On November 9, 2013, the Queens Museum completed an expansion doubling its size. This expansion included new artist studios in the Queens Museum's north wing. We invite all artists to apply for a subsidized studio at the Museum, available for one year, with a possible extension for a second year.


In designating permanent real estate to the long-term development of new work on-site, as well as to creating a community of artists, the Queens Museum aims to promote artists' creative process and professional development. The Queens Museum Studio Program is one part of a suite of artists' services funded by The Scherman Foundation's Katharine S. and Axel G. Rosin Fund that also includes on- and off-site workshops and professional development for emerging artists across New York City. Please see ourwebsite for more information.

Studio monthly fees: 
550 sq ft studio = 350 USD/month

Who should apply? 
As a studio program within a museum, we encourage artists to apply who believe they might be able to somehow contribute to and avail themselves of the life of the organization. Participation can range from being in your studio during Queens Museum exhibition openings to organizing events for the public with the input of curatorial and events departments. Please consider your availability and geographical location carefully, and apply only if you are confident you will use the studio 15 hours per week or more. If you can, visit the museum before you apply to familiarize yourself with it.

Selection process
Selections will be made by Queens Museum staff and two distinguished outside professionals, one curator and one artist. This jury will select a small number of finalists who will then be interviewed in person or via Skype for a final decision.

The studios
Artists have 24-hour access to their studios and two adjacent lounge areas. Because the studios are within the Museum, there can be no use of toxic or combustible materials. There is limited access to a woodshop.

Community and career
We ask all studio artists to attend a monthly meeting to which everyone can bring ideas, questions, and interesting visitors. There are six scheduled studio visits a year, suggested by you; this is supplemented by people who may be at the museum for other reasons. Open studios are scheduled to coincide with exhibition openings at the Queens Museum.
