Call for Proposals: The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Salina needs some new artwork

The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Salina is seeking artists to develop original art for the new medical dducation building at 138 N. Santa Fe, scheduled to open in the summer of 2018.

Up to four artists or teams will be selected to create new works of art for four areas in the building. The art should reflect and be inspired by the missions of the medical and nursing schools. Visual artists and artist teams are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to artists residing in or with close ties to Salina and central Kansas, and all art mediums will be considered.

Applications consisting of a cover letter, images of recent work, an image list and an artist resume are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 13. Selected artists will be invited to create proposals specifically for installation.

Potential applicants are invited to a workshop at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Salina Innovation Foundation at the Masonic Center, 336 S. Santa Fe. The workshop will be led by Saralyn Reece Hardy, director of the Spencer Museum of Art at KU and former director of the Salina Art Center, who will be a member of the project review panel.

Call for Proposals: Norfolk International Airport needs some crazy-amazing public art (Norfolk, VA)

The Norfolk Public Art Commission and the Airport Art Planning Committee
seek to commission an artist to design and create exterior artwork.

LOCATION/CONTEXT: Norfolk is the cultural, educational, medical and business center of the seven city Hampton Roads area. It is thriving with culture, history, diversity, festivals, attractions and entertainment and boasts the best shopping and dining experiences in the entire region.  The city is a vital confluence of commerce, water, city, rail, transportation, government and business all coming together.  Norfolk hosts the world’s largest naval base, one of the busiest international ports on the East Coast, and the region’s international airport.
      Norfolk International Airport is the major airport serving southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina. Surrounded by water and garden, it is enhanced by the splendor of the neighboring Norfolk Botanical Garden, which creates a beautiful buffer zone between the airport and the outside world. The year-round beauty of the airport grounds has become a national role model for reconciling expanding air facilities with a delicate ecological sanctuary. It has one of the most beautiful air approaches of any city in the world. The recently renovated lobby and concourses are bright and modern with open views of the lush landscapes.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:  The Public Art Planning Committee seeks an artist to design and create exterior artwork that will signal Norfolk as a friendly and welcoming city. The art should be site-specific, creatively stimulate thought and conversation, and be relevant to Norfolk. The perfect artwork will create a sense of arrival, originality and momentarily relieve the stresses of air travel. 

PROJECT SITE:  Exterior artwork should be experienced by the maximum number of airport patrons. There are a variety of potential artwork sites. A key location is at the main entrance on Norview Avenue and Azalea Garden Road and would be seen as travelers enter or exit the airport grounds.  The park just outside the pedestrian bridge which runs between the main terminal and the baggage claim would also be a good location for artwork to be viewed both from indoors and outdoors.  Artwork would need to be approximately 20’ tall to be at eye level to the inside.

SIZE/MEDIA: The artwork should be large enough to be viewed by the maximum number of people entering and exiting the airport. Artwork must be fabricated in durable, permanent outdoor materials that are safe and easily maintained.

PROJECT FUNDS: Up to five finalists may be selected to be interviewed by the Public Art Planning Committee via Skype. The finalists are not expected to complete a design at this stage but will be interviewed about past work and creative process.  There will also be a preliminary discussion of the site. The committee reserves the right to select the final artist without a finalist process.
     The total budget for the completed, delivered and installed artwork is $200,000. This will cover artist’s honorarium, fabrication, materials, shipping and insurance, travel expenses necessary to complete the project, project plaque, final documentation and any incidental expenses.  The artist must hire a Virginia licensed contractor to install the artwork(s).  The selected artist may be asked to present a community educational workshop or presentation.
     Please note that a city contract will be issued with a design phase requiring review and approval by the Public Art Commission prior to fabrication.
     The selected artist must carry a Commercial General Liability Insurance Policy naming both the City of Norfolk and the Norfolk Airport Authority as additional insured, and must provide certificates of insurance to that effect guaranteeing thirty (30) days written notice before any changes to the policies become effective. The normal expected insurance requirement is three million dollars each occurrence.  Insurance can be purchased and certificate presented after the first payment is made.  If the artist employs anyone in connection with this work, the artist must carry a workers compensation insurance policy and an automobile liability insurance policy if appropriate. The artist shall also be responsible for assuring subcontractors, if there are any, meet the same insurance requirements.

SELECTION CRITERIA AND AWARD CONSIDERATIONS: The commission will be awarded based on factors such as the aesthetic value, creativity and contemporary relevance of the proposed piece. The city will consider the diversity of beliefs and values and general standards of decency of the citizens who fund the commission and purchase public art for the City of Norfolk. The award will be made to the responsible offeror whose submission is determined in writing to be the most advantageous to the City taking into consideration the evaluation factors set forth in this Request for Proposal.
     The following criteria will be used in the proposal evaluation process:
          • Artistic merit (excellence, originality, creativity and innovative approaches) as evidenced by submitted materials
          • Professional artistic experience to fulfill the requirements of this project either in studio, educational, community, employment and/or art projects and the ability to undertake the design, creation and installation of the artwork
          • Appropriateness of materials, style and concepts in relation to this prospectus

Request for Qualifications: Federal Inspection Services Facility at SD County Regional Airport (San Diego, CA)

Summary: The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority seeks statements of qualifications from artists or artist teams to develop and implement their design for the Federal Inspection Services Facility Public Art Opportunities at the San Diego International Airport.

Background & Project Overview: The Airport has experienced rapid growth in international arrivals in recent years as a result of free trade agreements and airline joint ventures.

Further, advances in aircraft technology have broadened San Diego’s opportunities for international air service. In order to respond to the rapid growth in international arrival activities anticipated in 2017 and beyond, SAN will re-conceive a Federal Inspection Services Facility (FIS)

that: adds greater flexibility; increases FIS capacity level; and utilizes the newest processing efficiency introduced by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Public Art Opportunities: The Authority has identified two public art opportunities for the FIS facility. Artists can submit a SOQ on one (1) of the following projects:

1. Glass Partition Wall Artwork: This opportunity is for an Artist or Artist team to design, fabricate and install an art glass treatment within an approximately 270’ long by 13’ high partition wall along the south edge of the baggage claim hall of the FIS facility. The glass artwork must be a functionally-integrated architectural element that brings color and vibrancy to the site while also acting as a translucent screening device. The artwork design may be composed of abstract elements or feature narrative content that unfolds across the width of the wall. The artwork will be visible from both the interior of the baggage claim hall and the exterior curbside area, particularly when illuminated at night.

The imagery that comprises the design should reflect a cohesive theme or approach.

The precise detail and coordination of integrating the art with the CBP requirements will be confirmed through close collaboration with the Authority’s design team.

Glass Partition Wall Artwork Estimated Budget: $900,000

Atrium Suspended Artwork: This is an opportunity for an Artist or Artist team to design, fabricate and install a suspended artwork within the “meeter/greeter” lobby of the FIS facility. The meeter/greeter area is where friends and loved ones await and unite with arriving international passengers. The artwork design should be light and airy, and communicate a sense of welcome and embrace reflective of the function of the site. The selected Artist may consider subtly activating the work with analog kinetic features or including integrated lighting elements. The artwork must be composed of high quality and durable materials that require minimal maintenance in this high traffic area.

Atrium Suspended Artwork Estimated Budget: $250,000

The two (2) Artists selected for these opportunities will collaborate closely with the Authority’s design team throughout the design, construction, and installation process.

City of Palo Alto Public Art Program (CA), National Call for Submissions:  2016 – 2017 Prequalified Artist Pool

The City of Palo Alto Public Art Program is inviting artists and artist teams working in a variety of media to submit qualifications for potential inclusion in a prequalified artist pool for upcoming public art opportunities. Eligible applicants will be selected for the Prequalified Pool from which the Palo Alto Public Art Program staff will recommend appropriate applicants for a range of permanent and temporary public art opportunities throughout the City. Most public art commissions will be associated with municipal and private development projects as they arise throughout Palo Alto. Artists may submit existing artworks for consideration for temporary display within the City. Social practice and performance artists are also welcome to apply for temporary public art initiatives. Artists invited to be part of the Prequalified Pool will be selected based on appropriateness of their previous experience and artistic excellence. Some projects may also provide opportunities for an artist / artist team to work as part of a design team along with the project architect/designer.

Budget: Budgets for permanently sited work will range from $15,000 to approximately $300,000. The budgets are inclusive of artists fees, fees associated with design, fabrication, installation, and insurance provisions. Temporary public art budgets vary depending on the individual opportunity. Artists will be contacted prior to any selection panel process to confirm their interest and availability for a particular commission.

Eligibility: The call is open to all professional artists / artist teams over the age of 18 residing in the United States. Local artists residing in the Northern California Bay Area Region are strongly encouraged to apply, and may be given preference for projects with limited budgets. Any artists who apply as part of a team may not also apply as individual artists.
