Call for Proposals: Alachua County Office of the Public Defender's new building is naked (Gainesville, FL)

The Alachua County Office of the Public Defender has recently completed construction of their new facility located at 151 SW 2nd Avenue in Gainesville Florida. (Exhibit A - location map) It is the hope that this project will enhance the visual quality of the area for users of the building and the general public using SW 2nd Avenue near Main Street and the County Courthouse. Gainesville’s downtown is a combination of a college town with emerging innovation technology commercial centers. The downtown area also has many cultural attributes and activities including art galleries, permanent public art featuring internationally recognized muralists, two nationally recognized street art festivals each year, and monthly art walks. It is the hope that this project and others similar to it will further enhance the cultural vitality of the downtown area.

CITY OF GAINESVILLE/ALACHUA COUNTY ART IN PUBLIC PLACES TRUST
The APPT is a citizen advisory board appointed by the City of Gainesville and Alachua County to manage and oversee the purchase of public art. These projects are funded from a percentage of construction costs of government facilities. The APPT is partnering with the Alachua County Public Defender’s Office to select works for installation. Members of the Alachua County Public Defender’s Office will serve as temporary Trust members for the duration of the project.

LOCATION
There are two exterior walls that would serve well for public art installations. One is a contiguous 3-paneled masonry wall located on the south of the entrance courtyard (Exhibit B Dimensions of the Contiguous Courtyard Walls) and another is the masonry wall adjacent to the building’s main entry and area immediately in front of it (Exhibit C Dimensions of the Entrance Wall Adjacent Entry) (Exhibit D Photographs of both locations).

This call is open to all artists and artists teams, regardless of location, but regional artists are strongly encouraged to participate and will be awarded additional points in the selection process. Regional artists are defined as artists living within a 100 mile radius of Gainesville city limits.

Artists or artist teams are asked to propose works for one or both of the locations. The proposal may include complimentary works that can be installed on both sites. The proposals must be suitable to the scale of pedestrians as well as slower speed traffic traveling along SW 2nd Avenue. The sites are limited in space and heavy traffic is expected, so the Trust will consider proposals that do not impede circulation of the space.

The works should be created of material appropriate to an outdoor environment, must be of suitable construction that will last with minimal maintenance and be appropriate for public viewing. Gainesville, Florida is hot and humid with intense sun and seasonal heavy rain in the summer and the temperature can be in the teens in the winter. Problems with rust and fading should be avoided. Resistance to hurricane force winds is important. The exterior sites for the project will be well traversed and must be of materials that are vandal resistant. Projects must also consider the safety of pedestrians.

Pieces will be selected based on these criteria and at the discretion of the Art in Public Places Trust.

BUDGET
The total project budget for services rendered will include $25,000.00 that will be divided at the discretion of the Trust between the two sites. An honorarium of $500 will be paid to the project finalists to help defray travel or proposal development expenses. Site visitation in advance of the finalists’ presentations to the APPT is encouraged and it is recommended that finalists present in person.

DEADLINES AND IMPORTANT DATES
Monday, August 4, 2017, 5:00 PM — Artist will submit their proposals.

Wednesday, August 16, 2017 — Finalists will be selected and notified.

Wednesday, September 6, 2017 3:30-6:00 PM — Finalists or their representatives are invited to present site specific proposals at the proposal review meeting at the Historic Thomas Center.

Wednesday, September 15, 2017 — Selected artists will be notified and installations will begin.

Wednesday, December 6, 2017 — Art will be completely installed.

A detailed agenda with presentation times will follow as the meeting grows closer. If you are unable to attend the meeting, we can present a PowerPoint of your proposal with you included via Skype or by phone.

PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS
1. A current professional resume.

2. Your proposal(s) for the Alachua County Public Defender’s Office project, which must include the following:

  • Written description and concept of the work(s) and its intended relationship to the goals of the pieces set forth in this request.
  • Description of the medium, including all materials and the origin of the materials.
  • Description of the method of construction and installation.
  • Dimensions of the work.
  • Scale drawings and/or model of the sculpture (if model, include a photograph or sketch of the model) and installation details.
  • A projected timeline of completion and installation of work.

3. A detailed budget for your proposed artwork, including installation costs and liability insurance for yourself (and assistants, if any) during the installation. Your budget must also provide for publication quality photography of the completed work (to be submitted after installation), in the form of digital images on a CD, flash drive or sent electronically.

Artist proposals and support materials will be reviewed by the Gainesville/Alachua County Art in Public Places Trust Advisory Board selection committee. The selection committee consists of the APPT Advisory Board and Alachua County Public Defender’s Office project representatives (who serve as temporary members of the Trust).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must demonstrate proficiency in style of show.
  • Strong staging and composition skills.
  • Understanding of subtext in character performance. Portfolio samples must demonstrate that all characters in a sequence do not behave the same. They are unique. Think about which character in a scene is dominant, which is submissive. What are the undercurrents? Whose scene is it?
  • Strong drawing and mechanical skills.
  • Knowledge of  applicable design software (Photoshop, Storyboard Pro) and hardware (Wacom Cintiq monitor and/or tablet).
  • Strong time-management skills.
  • Work well under pressure.
  • Ability to multitask a plus.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant drawing experience necessary.
  • BA preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year storyboard experience and/or training on a similar show; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Location/Context History

The Asian American Monument Committee of New Mexico requests artists or artists’ teams to submit qualifications for designing a public art sculpture budgeted for $265,000 in honor of the landmark civil rights ruling from Territory v Yee Shun (1882) which affirmed the competency of Chinese Americans to testify in court and have their testimony accepted.  For additional information on the history of the case, email namasland@bernco.gov Successful applicants will demonstrate:

  1. Cultural competency

  2.  An understanding of this court case and why it is still relevant to all Americans today. 

  3. A broad history of Chinese Americans using the judicial system to advance and protect civil rights

  4. Relevance to all Americans today.

Site:

The site for the sculpture is the urban environment in downtown Albuquerque at the Second Judicial District Courthouse in Albuquerque New Mexico at 400 Lomas Blvd NW, 87102.  The sculpture will be located on the west side of the court house.  (See attached photos.)

Project Intent/Theme:

The intent of this sculpture is to commemorate the landmark historic Chinese American civil rights ruling, Territory of New Mexico v. Yee Shun (1882).  This monument also honors the citizens and the legal system of New Mexico which recognizes that ‘justice and liberty for all’ is a principle for all ages and people. The sculpture should reflect the tenacity of the human spirit and speak to all people – not just Asian Americans, but could include elements of Asian American Culture. 

Media/Style/Size:

The committee seeks artists or artist teams who are proficient in large scale abstract sculpture who can evoke a contemplative and inviting space with their designs.  The size of the artwork should be proportionate to the scale of the courthouse and sidewalk and address the interactive and pedestrian nature of the location. Public safety is a concern. The artwork should not pose a threat of injury of any persons who may come in contact with the piece.

Project Funds:

$265,000 available to commission a work of art on the west side of the Second Judicial Courthouse - $255,000 from the New Mexico State Legislature and $10,000 from the City of Albuquerque.  A stipend of $2,000 will be provided to each of the three finalists to present their designs in person in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Timeframe:

The call is open for 60 days, three finalists will have 60 days to prepare their designs before presenting to the Asian American Monument Committee and the community in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

The Skirball’s In-school Residency Program provides students with opportunities to engage with issues that are important in their lives and explore how art can be a tool for social action. It strives to ignite students’ self-confidence, imagination, and sense of agency. Students and teachers work intensively over the course of 8-10 weeks with a teaching artist and Skirball educators to learn basic techniques in one or more creative disciplines. Each residency culminates in a professionally produced, student-created presentation at the Skirball Cultural Center.

MARK-MAKING IN LA: STORIES OF OUR STREETS

What is street art? Who speaks and who decides what counts as art? One class of high school students will embark on an immersive investigation of muralism, street art and the many other rich traditions of public artistic expression across Los Angeles and Mexico. Two Skirball exhibitions presented as a part of Pacific Standard Time: Los Angeles/Latin America will serve as an entry point and framework for this residency—Another Promised Land: Anita Brenner‘s Mexico and Surface Tension by Ken Gonzales-Day. Guided by a teaching artist, students will explore the contemporary relevance of street art and design in our city, creating original work that shares their stories of life in Los Angeles.

TEACHING ARTIST RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop a syllabus and lesson plan for a series of workshops spanning 8 to 10 weeks,  September – December 2017
  • Attend planning meetings with teachers and Skirball staff prior to the residency start date
  • Meet deadlines for submission of materials
  • Facilitate 1 or 2 hour in-school workshops weekly over 8-10 weeks and participate with the class in field trips to the Skirball
  • Develop a culminating student-produced event at the Skirball, in collaboration with Skirball staff

QUALIFICATIONS

The qualified candidate will have professional experience using visual arts to explore issues of social justice, a practice influenced byMexican and/or Mexican American identity, fluency in both English and Spanish, and at least two years previous teaching experience (experience working with classroom teachers and/or high school students preferred). A successful candidate will be organized and communicative; flexible and able to adapt lesson plans based on feedback; passionate and inspiring with respect to their art form.

Music Tastes Good is an eclectic two-day music and food festival, taking place at an outdoor location in downtown Long Beach, CA on Saturday, September 30th & Sunday, October 1st. Inspired by our nation’s shipping ports, and more specifically, the Port of Long Beach, this year’s event draws heavily on cultural exchange and the import and export of sounds, flavors, and ideas.

The festival is looking for projects that:

All media is accepted. This includes, but is not limited to, painting, photography, sculpture, light projection, video, and all two-dimensional and three-dimensional work, new-media and any non-traditional media. Submission can be a single piece, a series, an installation with multiple components, or any other output that could be exhibited in an outdoor space. The space is big, really big. Think big, nothing but vast amounts of bigness.

Call for Entries: Summer Group Exhibition at DAC Gallery (Los Angeles)

The DAC Gallery is seeking submissions for its annual Summer Group Exhibition that will take place June 3rd - July 7th, 2017.

This call is open to all artists within the continental United States. There is no submission fee. Although the range of accepted mediums is largely open, the gallery is interested in emphasizing artwork that is wholly or in part, made from fiber-based materials. 

Submissions are due by 4PM on May 12, 2017 to DACGalleryLA@gmail.com. Submissions will only be accepted through email (Dropbox, WeTransfer, Google Drive, and compatible methods of large file delivery applications are acceptable). An opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 3rd from 6-8PM.

I was part of a recent huddle in Los Angeles. It was an amazing experience to feel like we aren’t alone in our thinking about the current political climate. We talked about what is going on in our country and what we could do to make a difference.

This is one of my next steps. I am curating a mail art show at Brainworks gallery in August 2017.

Exhibition Dates: August 5th to 18th
Opening reception: August 5th 5-8pm

Media: All work must be on 4×6 inch postcard cardstock format and sent through the post office mail. Any work not following these guides will not be used.

Theme: Huddle. You are not alone. Show us how you #resist. We want to hear your voices.

Sales: All work is donated to the show and sold for $25 each. 100% of proceeds will be donated equally to the ACLU, Planned Parenthood and the Trevor Project.

The Marin Headlands is 13,000 coastal acres of national park located just 10 minutes north of San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge. Headlands Center for the Arts is housed in artist-renovated former military buildings, surrounded by low coastal hills and the Pacific Ocean at the northern edge of the entrance to the San Francisco Bay.
